UPON PAPER magazine is a portfolio object with a strong physical presence. With its 49 x 69cm closed format (19.3 x 27 in.) and 2,25kg weight it is hardly a publication that can easily be consumed while sitting in the tube or doing something else along the way. It demands enough space and the reader‘s full attention.
Each issue features a leitmotif, thematically linking an outstanding ensemble of artists, designers and creatives with a curious eye and fresh insight. What unites them is not their fame, but the quality of their practice and their contribution. UPON PAPER MAGAZINE arises from an intense passion for paper.
UPON PAPER #03 thus presents an outstanding lineup of international contributors, including James Franco, Jeff Burton, Larry Clark, Bill Henson, René Groebli, Rosa Loy and Hans Peter Adamski. Many of these works were created specifically for UPON PAPER #03. They recount the most diverse forms of human affection, emotional ties, and companionship. Loving and being loved, amour fou, self-love, first love, and the love of art, as well as the absence and the end of love, are the themes that the newest issue of UPON PAPER magazine deals with-thus touching, recalling, and sympathizing.
It is about lovers and beloveds, for example, in Groebli’s series Das Auge der Liebe (The Eye of Love), which he staged with his wife during their honeymoon in the 1950s, or in Kate Bellm’s cycle Lover, which shows her boyfriend at the diverse stops of their trip around the world together.
